Abstract

Abstract : In preparation for the arrival of a Mach 6 Ludwieg Tube at the United States Air Force Academy, a numerical simulation of the flow field within the test section of the wind tunnel has been undertaken. The goal of the project was to evaluate and numerically simulate the Mach 6 flow within the test section of the wind tunnel. These calculations allow for the determination of the size and conditions of the usable area within the test section. Relationships between the local Mach number and the position of a model in the test section were established, and flow parameters at the observation windows were studied, which will be used to position a Background-Oriented Schlieren system in the tunnel. The results will aid in future simulations of the Ludwieg Tube wind tunnel, and for comparisons with experimental results from the Mach 6 Ludwieg Tube wind tunnel after it is installed, as well as with results from similar Ludwieg Tubes at other institutions.
