Abstract

The finite element method is being used to investigate soil cutting and tillage processes to predict soil stress distribution of different sorts, soil deformation, horizontal draught and vertical uplift forces. Two various theoretical bases, the curve-fitting and elasto-plastic models, of non-linear finite element analysis of soil tillage are characterised. The Drucker-Prager model and curve-filling technique, being utilised for solving civil engineering elastoplastic problems, are selected to be applied to analyse operations related with agricultural soils such as soil compaction and tillage. Two aspects are taken into consideration, soil shear strength and soil-tool external friction. This paper investigates the ability of applying these techniques of modelling to study soil tillage process. Brief comparison between these methods is given as well.
