Abstract
AbstractThis chapter discusses previous research on the numerical simulation of self-healing cementitious materials (SHCMs). Numerical models of SHCMs can be, and have been, used for both the development of new materials and self-healing techniques, as well as for the design and analysis of structures formed from SHCMs. The behaviour of SHCMs is governed by a set of interacting physical processes, including mechanical micro- and macro-cracking, the flow of healing agents in intact and damaged cementitious matrices, mineral precipitation, healing agent curing and mechanical healing. Models for mechanical self-healing and transport processes are considered, along with the simulation of specific aspects of SHCM behaviour. The strengths and deficiencies of existing models are discussed and future development needs highlighted.
