Abstract

Saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers is simulated using a 2D density-dependent flow and transport. The numerical solution is computed by using P1 Lagrange finite elements. For the time discretization we use the backward Euler finite differences scheme. Upwind artificial diffusion is added to eliminate numerical oscillations produced by the Galerkin method. A transient fixed point mesh adaptation algorithm is used to improve the accuracy of the solution. 2D numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.
