Abstract

We developed an explicit Lagrangian finite element code (net3d) for contact‐penetration simulation of brittle materials using tetrahedral elements which provided more potential fracture surfaces than hexahedral elements . Cohesive‐law fracture model with node separation algorithm for the tensile loading and Mohr‐Coulomb model for the compressive loading with some experimental parameters were implemented to model the discrete nature for fracture and damage of brittle materials. The calculated penetration depth, damage shapes of the front and back target plates, and propagating crack paths were found to be in good agreement with experiment at oblique angle impact.
