Abstract
Mixed-flow dryers are widely used to preserve large mass flows of grain, rice and maize. Although well established, there is still a need to improve the dryer design in order to increase energy efficiency and safe product quality. The objective of this work is to study the airflow patterns in mixed-flow dryers with different air duct arrangements (horizontal and diagonal) using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The CFD model developed was validated based on measurements from the literature. The calibrated model was used to analyze the air flow distributions in the traditional dryer geometries. From the numerical results, design deficits could be indicated. Pros and cons of the different air duct arrangements were discussed. It could be shown, that the horizontal arrangement leads to a more homogeneous airflow distribution than the diagonal arrangement.
