Abstract

The latest release of the BERSAFE finite element system offers several different methods for evaluating energetically-based fracture parameters for post-yield fracture mechanics. These methods all incorporate different theoretical assumptions and involve varying numerical processes which result in different degrees of accuracy in the computed quantities. Critical comparisons of the above techniques have been made on three typical plane strain test specimens. All aspects of computation are identical except for the particular evaluation of each parameter, highlighting their relative accuracies under quite high amounts of plastic yielding.
