Abstract

Piled bridge abutments on soft clay may be loaded laterally from horizontal soil movements generated by the approach embankment. Various design methods have been proposed, although these generally show poor comparison with available data. This paper describes a finite element approach for analysing the response of pile groups influenced by lateral soil movements from a nearby surface load. The piles are represented by equivalent sheet-pile walls, and a plane strain analysis performed. Results from this method show good agreement under some conditions with experimental data obtained from centrifuge models. Conclusions are drawn regarding application of the analytical method to problems of this nature.
