Abstract

ABSTRACT Accurate modeling and ecient calculation of photon migration in biological tissues is requested for determinationof the optical properties of living tissues by in vivo experiments. This study develops a calculation scheme ofphoton migration for determination of the optical properties of the rat cerebral cortex (ca 0.2 cm thick) based onthe three-dimensional time-dependent radiative transport equation assuming a homogeneous object. It is shownthat the time-resolved pro les calculated by the developed scheme agree with the pro les measured by in vivoexperiments using near infrared light. Also, an ecient calculation method is tested using the delta-Eddingtonapproximation of the scattering phase function. Keywords: Optical properties, inverse analysis, radiative transport equation, di use optical tomography 1. INTRODUCTION Determination of the optical properties of biological tissue is one of the fundamental tasks for biomedical opticalimaging such as di use optical tomography, 1,2
