Abstract

A theoretical formulation and numerical simulation of the process of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) excited by a multiline incident beam is presented. The one-dimensional code includes pump depletion and contributions from resonant and off-resonant acoustic gratings. For line separations up to the order of the spontaneous Brillouin linewidth, gain enhancement is accompanied by phase shifts between lines due to complex, off-resonant terms, which may result in a degradation of conjugation fidelity. For larger frequency separations, the degree of amplification is dependent on the ratio of the coherence length of the pump line spectrum to the SBS gain length. Comparisons with experimental data on reflectivity versus line separation show very good agreement. >
