Abstract

This paper presents the mathematical models of the spindle/disks–shaft–housing system for vibro-acoustic analysis of hard disk drives operating in idle mode. A complete model of a spindle/disks assembly–shaft–housing system is developed using a multi-body system Lagrangian formulation. The transfer functions between source excitations and induced vibration on the housing are derived. The effect of adding flexibility to the non-spinning components (i.e. housing and shaft) is examined and the model capabilities are demonstrated through parameter studies.
