Abstract
Different smoke control strategies for the road tunnel with converging intersections are evaluated by the numerical method, and the optimum control strategy and longitudinal velocities are obtained. The results shown that when the fire occurs at the upstream to the intersection, longitudinal smoke control with the critical velocity can only prevent the backflow of the smoke at the main tunnel. The smoke can spread in the downstream ramp tunnel due to the stack effect, and this would be dangerous for the cars and the persons. The best smoke control strategy under this condition is that the longitudinal smoke control is implemented both in the main tunnel and the ramp tunnel, then the small longitudinal velocity in the ramp tunnel can prevent the smoke flowing in, this will be safe and economic.
