Abstract

An automatic method of calculation of the two-dimensional MTF of an optical system starting from its configuration data is described. This is carried out by the calculation of the two-dimensional Fourier transform of the distribution of the intensity of the image point, calculated by the spot diagram obtained by means of exact ray tracing, and taking into account the limitations imposed by diffraction. A numerical criterion of image quality is deduced based on the volume within this two-dimensional surface. Both the calculations of the MTF and the quality criterion are compared with the measurements obtained by experimental methods and show close agreement.
