Abstract

A 450 kW segmented arc heater facility is designed and its performance is analyzed using a computational code named ARCFLO4. The constrictor length is set to 46.2 cm, which allows a proper constrictor diameter and a nozzle throat diameter of 1.4 and 1.2 cm, respectively, considering the stability of arc discharge. It is shown that the calculated mass-averaged enthalpy values are within the range from 12.3 to . The ratio of the centerline enthalpy to the mass-averaged enthalpy in the nozzle throat region is about 1.22, which signifies a fairly uniform total enthalpy distribution. The wall heat fluxes are also calculated to provide the information needed for designing the cooling system.
