Abstract

A 3-channel grating assisted mode-division (de)multiplexer is proposed and designed with slab waveguides using 2D Finite-Difference Time-Domain (2D-FDTD) technique. The proposed device structure consists of two identical single mode waveguides, one multimode waveguide, and two gratings with different periods. (De)multiplexing operation is achieved by contra-directionally coupling first and second order transverse electric (TE) modes of the multiomde waveguide to fundamental TE mode of the two single mode waveguides. The fundamental mode of multimode waveguide propagates in the same direction without being coupled to any other mode. Numerical analysis of the proposed device has shown insertion loss ranging from −1.27 to −0.43 dB and crosstalk between −31.20 to −15.31 dB at the operating wavelength of 1550 nm.
