Abstract

Magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thrusters are developed at the Institute for Space Systems (IRS) of the Stuttgart University. They are studied by plasma diagnostic techniques as well as by numerical methods. Computations of the high enthalpy plasma flow include the electric discharge, the electron temperature and the conservation of the species and vibrational energy. The equations describing the various physical phenomena are coupled by corresponding source terms. Numerical results will be presented for two MPD thrusters, an MPD-type plasma wind tunnel source and a radio frequency plasma source. The results of these thermal and chemical non-equilibrium computations will be compared and discussed with experimental data.
