Abstract

In this article a numerical model, developed previously by the authors to study the sealing performance of hydraulic reciprocating seals, is extended in order to include the effect of seal roughness. The model is verified on a typical elastomeric “U-type” rod seal under steady-state conditions. The influence of the roughness geometrical distribution and wavelength on seal performance is analysed, and it is shown that seal roughness significantly influences the results compared with numerical predictions.
