Abstract

This research numerically investigated the copper loss of three-phase transformer under various geometry designs. A commercial code of finite element method was employed to conduct the simulation of electrical and magnetic fields. The eddy current in windings caused extra loss compared with the results without eddy current. The amount of the loss due to eddy current was influenced by the geometry relations of primary and secondary windings. The primary winding of each phase was considered as six coils serially connected. The gaps between adjacent coils were set from 15.0 mm to 35.0 mm. The gap between the primary winding and the secondary winding was also considered to explore the effect on the eddy current loss. The effect of eddy current causes increase of total loss about 9.5%〜18.66%, depending on the geometry design.
