Abstract

Two-dimensional computer code for forced convection heat transfer from a flat plate in He II was developed based on the two fluid model and the Gorter-Mellink mutual friction. Numerical analysis of heat transfer from a flat plate heater of 6 mm wide and 20 mm long located on a bottom wall of a horizontal rectangular duct of 3 mm /spl times/ 20 mm inner cross sectional area and 100 mm long was performed by using the computer code, and the adequacy of the numerical model was estimated by comparison of the calculated results with the experimental data reported by the authors. The calculations were made for the flow velocities ranging from 0 to 2.1 m/s and for the inlet liquid temperatures of 1.8, 1.9, and 2.0 K. The critical heat fluxes (CHFs) obtained by the analysis were higher for higher flow velocity and lower inlet temperature. They agreed with the experimental data within 8% difference. It was confirmed that the numerical model adopted in the code is adequate and the code can describe the heat transfer in forced flow He II.
