Abstract

Finite difference and finite element computations were employed to determine temperature and stress distributions in two casting wheel concepts. Wheel material properties and wheel geometry were varied to study their influence on the resulting casting process parameters. A finite element study revealed the locations and the approximate magnitude of the main stresses in a casting wheel with axial cooling boreholes. The results of this study indicate that plastic deformation and high compressive stresses are likely to occur in this type of casting wheels.
