Abstract

In an oscillating water column (OWC) based wave energy device, a bi-directional airflow drives an air turbine, and the turbine converts the pneumatic energy into the mechanical energy. A counter-rotating impulse turbine for the bi-directional airflow has been proposed by M. E. McCormick of the United States Naval Academy in 1978. In this study, in order to make a practical design of the counter-rotating impulse turbine, S-shaped middle vanes were installed between two rows of rotors, and the shape of middle vane was changed. The effect of middle vane shape on the turbine performance was investigated by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis.
