Abstract

ABSTRACT Joint use of the numerical techniques cluster analysis and ordination, when accompanied by a simple presence-absence survey of petrographic variables in a large number of rock samples, provides a quick and objective initial view of the microfacies relationships in a stratigraphic sequence. Application of these numerical methods to the Lower Cretaceous Cupido Limestone in Arteaga Canyon, Coahuila, Mexico, yielded eight distinct microfacies, which appear to fit a generalized cycle of carbonate deposition on a broad, shallow bank.
