Abstract

For electric power applications of YBCO coated conductors, the reduction and estimation of AC losses are important issues. This paper reports numerical analysis of electromagnetic phenomena in YBCO coated conductor with particular emphasis on AC loss characteristics. FEM analysis of electromagnetic fields was carried out with strongly nonlinear E– J characteristics of superconductor, and the dependence of AC losses on angle of external magnetic field was investigated. The results indicate that the AC losses depend almost only on the perpendicular component of external magnetic field, while at a higher magnetic field the AC losses also slightly depend on the parallel component.
