Abstract

The number of “subconsultant” posts being advertised and accepted has almost quadrupled over the past four years in England, suggests a workforce survey from the Royal College of Physicians. The fourth annual rolling survey of holders of the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), which this year had a 50% response rate among the 441 doctors contacted, shows that the proportion of newly qualified consultants gaining substantive posts rose by more than 6% to reach 62% in 2012. But the overall number of those obtaining these posts was lower than that of previous years, with an increase in the average number of job applications matched by a concomitant fall in the offers of consultant posts across all specialties.
