Abstract
BACKGROUND; The Chi-Mei Foundation Hospital (CMFH) auditory testbattery based on four standardized spondaic-spelling word lists in Mandarin has been used in auditory training to evaluate the performance of profoundly hearing- impaired patients who have received hearing-aids or cochlear implants. Using the CMFH auditory test battery, we evaluated and compared the performance results of two different cochlear implant coding strategies. METHODS: Ten post-lingual deaf with cochlear implants were retrospectively divided into two groups based on implant coding strategies, and followed for over 18 months. These two different coding strategies were the spectral-peak(SPEAK-22) strategy, used in the Nucleus-22 mini-implant , and the high-rate continuous interleaved sampling ( CIS) strategy, implemented in the MED-EL Combi-40 cochlear implant. WE compared the SPEAK-22 and CIS strategies with speech understanding tests and recap-tion threshold assessment in quiet. RESULTS:In intrasubject comparisons after initial device fitting. Tests showed that learn-ing effects continued even beyond 12 months of implant use. In intersubject comparisons, the mean scores for CIS coding implants in closed-set tests were superior to SPEAK-22 coding implants in the 3rd month and 6th month of use, Additionally, the mean thresholds for speech reception were consistently better with CIS encoding over the first 24 months of use. CONCLUSION: The maen results for the CIS coding strategy were superior to those of the SPEAK-22 strategy in the early rehabilitation stage. Long-term both strategies produced excellent results.
