Abstract

A novel poly(Schiff-base sulfide) polymer was synthesized by nucle-ophilic displacement polymerization of N,N'-bis(p-chlorobenzylidine)-4, 4'-diaminodiphenyl ether with sodium sulfide in anhydrous condition. The resulting polymer was soluble in some aprotic solvents having inherent viscosity of 0.18 dL/g in dimethylacetamide at 30°C. The monomer and the polymer were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared, and 1H NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy. The thermal characteristics of the polymer were also studied by thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The temperature of 10% weight loss, glass transition temperature (T g). and crystalline melting point (T m) of the polymer were found to be 420, 91.89, and 38575°C respectively.
