Abstract

The sigma term or the matrix element of the isoscalar-scalar current between one-nucleon states at zero momentum transfer is calculated, from the nucleon current correlation function in an external scalar field using the QCD sum rule method. For the response function of the chiral condensate 〈| q ̄ q|0〉 , we use chiral perturbation theory. The value obtained for nucleon σ term is in qualitative agreement with the determination of Gasser, Leutwyler and Sainio from dispersion analysis.
