Abstract

Autoradiographic studies have been made of the pattern of DNA, RNA and protein synthesis in the uterus and blastocyst of the rat during early pregnancy. DNA synthesis starts on day 2 in the luminal and glandular epithelium; in the stroma it is evident on day 4 and reaches its maximum on day 6. RNA synthesis starts in the uterus on day 2 and reaches a peak by day 3 and is maintained up to day 6; the radioactivity is localized in the nuclei. Protein synthesis is evident on days 1 and 2, decreases on day 3, increases again on day 4 in the stroma and is maintained up to day 6. DNA, RNA and protein syntheses are evident in the blastocyst by day 4. These synthetic activities are initiated in the blastocyst when the zona is still intact and once initiated are maintained up to the evening of day 6, when the blastocyst becomes attached to the uterine epithelium.
