Abstract

Conventional nucleation theory cannot properly be applied to the process of co-precipitation of vacancies and interstitials into voids. A proper formalism is developed herein and utilized to derive an expression for the void nucleation rate under these conditions. Although such a system is of a higher degree of irreversibility than those considered by Volmer and by Becker, the resulting rate equations are superficially similar. In the present case, however, the activation barrier is a function of the defect mobilities, hence is not the customary free energy of activation.
