Abstract

Growth of silver films prepared onto pure and cobalt doped NaCl single crystal substrates cleaved in air and maintained at room temperature (∼25°C) under high vacuum (10-5 Torr) has been investigated in the initial stages. The stages has revealed wide differences in the growth behaviour of the films in the two cases. The density of nucleation on pure NaCl is found to be greater than that onto doped substrates. It is observed that the films grown on the doped substrates have (100) predominant orientation whereas the films grown onto pure substrates under identical conditions always showed polycrystalline structure.
