Abstract

A study has been made of domain nucleation and propagation phenomena by pricking with a non magnetic needle a single-crystal MnBi film under zero external field perpendicular to the surface. The demagnetized pattern formed by needle pricking is very different from that of ``as-grown'' film. When a thicker part of the film (ratio of thickness to characteristic length h/lc∼100) is touched, the reversed domain encloses the pricking center and a hollow bubble is formed. The reversed domains emanate from the hollow bubble forming many bubble lattices with the initial magnetization, as if the Huygens wave spread from the source to the surrounding, and finally the crystal is demagnetized.
