Abstract

Nucleate pool boiling tests were performed on a number of GEWA-T deformed low fin surface copper tubes in saturated R-113. The gap width, S T, varied between 0.15 and 0.55 mm. A smooth tube was also tested for reference. The boiling curves for each test section exhibited the hysteresis effect commonly observed with liquids of high wettability; however, the largest thermal excursions or temperature overshoots observed were only 1.5–3.3 K. This is much lower than reported for other enhanced surfaces tested under similar conditions. The small excursions are the result of enhanced free convection and the difficulty of spreading the boiling, both effects being attributed to the re-entrant helical channels.
