Abstract

An improvement of the Heidelberg source for polarized heavy ions (PSI) is polirazed. To produce a nuclear spin polarized atomic Na beam an electro-optically modulated laser beam has been used for opticalpumping. An electro-optic modulator (EOM) was constructed with a bandwidth of 1.8 GHz. Without a spin separating Stern-Gerlach magnet it is now possible to prepare a Na atomic beam in one single hyperfine magnetic substate. Thus the beam figure of merit (polarization 2 × intensity of the beam) has been improved by a factor of 4 as compared to the previous setup. Experiences with the new system collected from several beam times are discussed.
