Abstract
In order to clarify the nature of the spin gap in 1-D AF chains we have made a systematic NMR experiment on NENP [Ni(C 2H 8N 2) 2NO 2(ClO 4)] (one of the typical S = 1 linear chain presenting the Haldane effect), CuCl 2(γ-picoline) 2 ( S = ½ linear chain with bond alternation) and Cu 2Cl 4(1,4-diazacycloheptane) 2 ( S = ½ zig-zag chain with non-negligible second-neighbor coupling). For these materials we have confirmed the existence of the spin gap from the characteristic temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation. The derived spin gaps are consistent with those from the susceptibility and high-field magnetization measurements. The field dependence of the relaxation rate, including the critical field where the spin gap closes, is compared and discussed.
