Abstract

A 1.4 MeV electron accelerator was used as a source of bremsstrahlung to determine the widths and hence the mean lifetimes τ for ground state transitions of the 1.01 MeV level in 27Al and the first excited states of 31P and 35Cl. Only self-absorption measurements were performed. The object of the work was mainly to resolve discrepancies existing between results obtained by other workers. The following results were obtained: 1.01 MeV level in 27 Al: τ = 0.5 −0.2 +0.5 psec , 1.26 MeV level in 31 P: τ = 0.73 −0.12 +0.19 psec , 1.22 MeV level in 35 Cl: τ = 0.13 −0.02 +0.03 psec . Extensive measurements to observe resonant scattering from a new level in 31P at an energy of 450 keV yielded negative results.
