Abstract

Anybody who has seen the devastation created in the American corn belt by the 1988 drought cannot fail to be impressed by the potential of the 'greenhouse effect' drastically to change our way of life on earth. If this drought is indeed one of the consequences of global warming then we can expect worse and more frequent catastrophes of this magnitude in the coming decades. What is to be done about it? One positive step is to make greater use of nuclear energy. The use of electricity is in any case increasing in developed countries, and if that electricity is not generated by burning fossil fuel then we shall produce substantial reductions in the production of carbon dioxide, a contributor to the greenhouse effect.
