Abstract

A Western authority on the history and consequences of the 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl' nuclear power plant surveys the current debate in Ukraine over the role of nuclear power in the country's energy balance and management of the environmental hazard posed by the destroyed fourth reactor at Chernobyl'. A particular focus is on disputes within the Ukrainian Nuclear Power industry, and between the industry and Western funding and regulatory agencies, as well as the limited scope for action given an acute lack of financial resources. Attention also is devoted to changing public perceptions of nuclear energy in Ukraine. Journal of Economic Literature, Classification Numbers: Q42, Q43, Q48. 15 references.
