Abstract

Globally, the energy security narrative has been undergoing a fast change. While the conventional Anglo-Saxon definition of energy security gave significant weightage to fossil fuel-dominated energy mix, increasing attention is being given to new energy mix dominated by low-carbon energy sources. Solar, wind, nuclear, and hydro together constitute major share of the low-carbon energy mix in developing Asian economies as efforts to reduce dependency on fossil fuels are gaining momentum. Nuclear energy being a mature technology has tremendous potential in meeting the growing energy demand. This chapter aims to understand the relevance of nuclear energy in the low-carbon energy mix of developing Asia and explores the prevailing energy–climate debate in the global east.
