Abstract

The description of pion absorption in nuclei in the Skyrme model is similar to that used in phenomenological meson theory. The main absorption mechanism can be described as a two-nucleon mechanism in which the initial pion is rescattered once prior to final absorption. The long range parts of the rescattering amplitudes for theS- andP-wave rescattering mechanisms have the conventional pion exchange form. The model predicts a strong increase of the isospin evenS-wave rescattering contribution to the absorption rate above threshold, which in the case of the deuteron would cause a rapid decrease of the netS-wave absorption rate with increasing pion energy.
