Abstract
AbstractNuclear medicine dose assessment, informally called as ‘Nuclear Medicine Dosimetry’ is an important topic in managing nuclear medicine patients who are administered with radiopharmaceuticals, especially in therapeutic procedures. This chapter explains the need, As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) and As High As Safely Administrable (AHASA) concepts, the term ‘absorbed dose’ and its units, the formula for calculating absorbed dose, components involved in absorbed dose calculation, their resources, the concept of equivalent dose and effective dose, various systems of dose assessment including Medical Internal Radiation Dosimetry (MIRD), the International Commission on Radiation Protection (ICRP) and the Radiation Dose Assessment Resource (RADAR) methods, free resources for dose assessment in diagnostic nuclear medicine and a discussion on practical therapeutic nuclear medicine dose assessment. The chapter is prepared considering practical nuclear medicine dose assessment.
