Abstract

A study of the concentration dependence of the chemical shift of water when dissolved in a series of cyclic ethers has been made. The relative electron donor strengths obtained for the ethers corresponded closely with those found by means of other techniques. The results support the idea that small amounts of ether increase the degree of hydrogen bonding in water, and that even for a considerable excess of ether, much of the water persists in clusters which do not finally break down until a minimum size is reached.
