Abstract

Abstract Measurements of magnetic susceptibility and nuclear magnetic resonance have been made on a wide range of the intermetallic compounds NiAl, CoAl and FeAl in the β-phase region and on the equiatomic alloy CoTi. The measurements suggest that there are localized moments in cobalt-rich CoAl and in iron-rich FeAl, and at low temperature, magnetic ordering occurs in the CoAl alloys. There was no simple relation between the susceptibility and the Knight shift but the results enable some general remarks to be made about the contributions to these quantities. The Ruderman—Kittel-Yoshida interaction was independent of temperature, but the orbital interaction was strongly temperature dependent.
