Abstract

Penetrating showers produced in iron plates of a multiplate cloud chamber by muons at 148 m w.e. underground are analysed. The events are interpreted by the usual method of virtual quanta due to Williams and Weizsacker. Cross-sections for such events have been determined by using the virtual photon spectrum given by Heitler and also the spectrum calculated by Kessler and Kessler. The observed cross-sections for energy transfers in the range (1⋎8) GeV agree with that obtained from the Heitler spectrum with a constant cross-section 1.4·10−28 cm2 per nucleon for interaction of photons with nucleons. Angular distribution of secondary penetrating particles of the observed showers is shown to be given by the projected angular distribution function obtained by Das and Sinha.
