Abstract

South Korea has been an important player in nuclear governance in the Asia-Pacific, on nuclear safety, nuclear safeguards and nuclear security. This chapter discusses national policies and initiatives adopted by South Korea to enhance nuclear governance in the country and the wider Asia-Pacific. It also examines the roles of various nuclear agencies of South Korea, including its centre of excellence on nuclear security – the International Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Security Academy of the Korea Institute of Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Control – to demonstrate how South Korea provides capacity building assistance to various countries in the region, particularly Southeast Asian countries, in the field of nuclear governance.
