Abstract

The development of atomic energy in the Soviet Union as in the United States had its origins in World War II. Soviet engineers are building atomic power stations and investigating other sources of energy, including tidal and geothermal power as well as the prospects of nuclear fusion.Academician Emelyanov, a metallurgist, is currently deputy chairman of the State Committee of USSR Council of Ministers on Use of Atomic Energy, and a member of the Disarmament Commission of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He is also chief delegate of the USSR at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna.This article was adapted by Eugene Rabinowitch from a report Academician Emelyanov delivered to the 20th Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs in September 1970.
