Abstract

Nuclear cross sections, σij,i=π±, K+, K−, p, p, A; j=p, A have been derived for all energies. A new expression for the average charged particle multiplicity together with new empirical formulas for elastic and inelastic pp cross sections have been derived and used to determine the nuclear cross sections. Extrapolations to high and superhigh energies are given. For instance, at 1.8 TeV (Amos et al.) the experimental result is 16.6±1.6 mb for the elastic pp cross section. From this result we predict 72.16±3.34 mb for the total pp cross section in agreement with the experimental result with ρ=0.145. At E=1020 eV we obtain 32 g/cm2 for the interaction length of nucleons in air. The measured inelastic 4He‐Al cross section is 720±30 mb at 4.5 GeV/c. We obtain 729 mb.
