Abstract

A significant anisotropy of γ radiation from aligned Co 60 nuclei has been detected. From the variation of the anisotropy with temperature a value for the magnetic moment can be determined: this is 3.5 ± 0.5 nuclear magnetons and is consistent with the Schmidt limit of 3.8 based on nuclear shell model assignments. Similar investigation of Co 58 shows that the γ ray cannot be dipole but is probably quadrupole. This would give a value of μ of 3.5 which is smaller than the Schmidt limit of 6.2.
