Abstract
This paper provides insight into the National Science Foundation's support of basic research in tropical biology as of 1 January 1977. It analyzes the contribution of the Division of Environmental Biology to the fostering of basic biological research in the tropics in light of the rapid and irrevocable disappearance of tropical ecosystems.
