Abstract

An eight‐week Summer Institute in ‘Physical Properties and Behavior of Soils’ will be held at the Technological Institute, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, from June 22 to August 14, 1970. The program will include four courses plus a series of seminars by distinguished professors and practicing engineers. The included courses, which will each meet five hours per week, and their respective instructors are: Processes of Soil Genesis, Arley G. Franklin, Department of Civil Engineering, Northwestern University; Physics and Chemistry of Soils, Charles A. Moore, Department of Materials Engineering, University of Illinois at Chicago Circle; Physical Behavior of Soils, Raymond N . Yong, Department of Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics, McGill University; Engineering Properties of Soils, Raymond J. Krizek, Department of Civil Engineering, Northwestern University. Although each course may be regarded as an individual entity, there will be a planned effort to correlate course material in order to minimize duplication and maximize the effectiveness of presentation. Emphasis will be directed toward providing a rigorous treatment of fundamental principles, a thorough knowledge of available analytical tools, and an appreciation for the practical application of these techniques.
