Abstract
A new type of optical solitary wave is shown to exist in Kerr media. These solitary waves consist of localized structures separating uniform domains of orthogonal modes of the electromagnetic field and can be viewed as optical domain walls. The fundamental nature of these new solitary waves is revealed by their link with intrinsic instabilities of light propagation in Kerr media. We suggest application of the new solitary waves to optical fiber communications. We show that their topology is adapted to the non-return-to-zero modulation format and that their fundamental features offer significant potential advantages with respect to the usual return-to-zero NLS soliton transmission scheme.
